The best hearing protectors are the ones that employees will actually want to wear.
When selecting hearing protection devices, often employers focuses on the product’s noise reduction rating, presuming that the one with the highest rating is the best choice. We would suggest that this is not the best approach. No matter how much noise reduction it offers, if it’s not comfortable, it’s not likely to be worn properly or at all.
Hearing protectors only need to provide the appropriate amount of noise reduction for the environment in which they will be used.
The best hearing protectors are ones that are both very comfortable, and have just the right amount of noise reduction. Any less and they won’t do the job. Any more and you are likely to notice complaints such as “I can’t hear anything with these on!” We recommend offering at least two or three types of hearing protectors to your workforce (at least two types of plugs and one muff).
