Independent Medical Assessments
Right in the early stage of absence, independent medical assessments can answer the most important questions.
Some cases can be quite complex. For example, a 6-month absence due to chronic back problems may be difficult to diagnose, however in this particular case, our orthopedic surgeon reviewed all medical history and identified that there existed a congenital component. Our occupational physicians provide objective medical evidence to support workplace absenteeism. They will communicate with the employee’s family physician. The employee is engaged in the return to work process, along with their own doctor, and they can appreciate the value of a second opinion. As the employer, you receive a detailed report on the true medical status of the employee, allowing you to work together to determine how soon the employee can return, and if any modified duties are required.
From surgeons to psychiatrists, our occupational physicians and specialists can examine your employee and speak to their physician and/or a workplace safety board (WSIB) physician or adjudicator. Independent medical assessments provide information to help you manage your occupational illness cases, although any employee who misses work for more than 5 days should complete an assessment. We also recommend an assessment if you need supporting information on an employee’s status, particularly when you require support for a WSIB tribunal or appeal.
